Old Stories Through Young Eyes
Everyone has a story to tell. Although not everyone's story ends up in your History book, each story is important in its own way. Each one is affected by what happens around them and in turn leaves a mark upon the world.

The intergenerational project, "Old Stories through Young Eyes" focused on the story and involves art students in Portumna Community School and senior citizens attending Portumna Day Care Centre. The young people interviewed their elders inviting them to share stories of their past. A storyboard was created based on the stories told. This work was carried out over several weeks as both age groups became familiar in engaging with each other. The results of this collaboration are now on display in Couser's Shop window on St. Brendan's St. See the stories of Reenie, Neil, Josie, Dorothy, Eileen,Chrissie, Bridie, Cissie and Josie as interpreted by the students of Portumna Community School's 5th year Art Class under the direction of art teacher Lorna Kincaid.

This project was facilitated by Portumna Arts Group and co-ordinated by Orla Hayes as part of the Galway County Council funded Community Inclusion Week 2013. Thanks to all who were involved in the project, from both Portumna Community School and Portumna Social Services Day Care Centre - especially the artists and Storytellers who helped to make this project so special and to Principal, Derry Long, Day Care Centre Co-Ordinator, Anna Callinan and project leader, Orla Hayes, a very big thank you from Portumna Arts Group.

Christmas Celebrations at Portumna Retirement Village
Preparations are well underway at Portumna Retirement Village to celebrate the Festive Season. The fun was kicked off on Friday last at the residents' Christmas party, which was preceded by a concert from local superstar Mike Denver. Mike sang many of his most popular songs and favourites of the residents and many residents joined in with him on the more festive season songs. The party proved to a fantastic success.

Speaking at the party, Mary Herron, Care Manager emphasised that nursing homes can be very happy, positive environments and both staff and residents are very excited and really looking forward to the celebrations at Christmas. "The home is a very close-knit community and residents are like an extended family for all staff. Christmas celebrations bring great joy, excitement and happiness and are further opportunity to show our appreciation and love of our residents who are at the centre of the care we provide"

No Santa At Portumna Castle This Year
Unfortunately due to the diminishing number of voluntary members, the Christmas Events Committee are unable to hold their annual event, 'Santa at the Castle', in Portumna Castle & Gardens this year. This has been a very successful event since 2009. The original voluntary committee, too many to name individually, transformed Portumna Castle & Gardens into a magical winter wonderland with over one thousand visitors to the castle on the day.

Due to the overwhelming turn out that first year, the committee changed their plan for the following years to allow easier and more comfortable access to Santa in his cosy grotto. Tickets were sold locally and colour coded for specific visiting times. For a nominal sum, families arrived at Portumna Castle reception where parents were comforted with a glass of mulled wine while waiting to be brought to the castle by a swinging, singing group of elves. There the children met with and received a present from Santa. Afterwards, families had time to soak up the Christmas atmosphere in the seasonally decorated castle. Faces were painted and children enjoyed various activities organised by the elves. All of this in the wonderful environs of a 17th Century Castle right on our doorstep.

It is a great disappointment to many that this event will not be taking place this year. It brought magic and excitement not only to local families but also to families from surrounding areas of Counties Galway and Clare, to Portumna town.

Requests have been received to revive this event for Christmas 2014. If you are interested in getting involved, or if you are part of a local group who wish to take it on as part of a fund-raiser, look out for a notice in the Portumna Notes during October 2014. This is a very worthwhile project, hard work for a short period of time but very satisfying and fun.

The community wish to thank the original committee who put so much work into getting this project started and to the remaining committee of 2012 who with far less assistance continued to present such a wonderful experience for all to enjoy.

Anne Rabbitte Selected as Fianna Fail Candidate
Anne Rabbitte was overwhelmingly selected at the local F.F. convention in Loughrea where she exceeded the quota on the first count to stand for selection in the fourth coming Local Government Elections 2014. She will be the only female candidate on the F.F. Ticket. There was huge local support for Anne Rabbitte on the night from the people of Portumna, Killimor, Abbey, Tynagh, Quansboro Tiernascragh and Mullagh and they were very vocal in their support.

Anne thanked all who supported her and travelled on the night to ensure that the people of South East Galway got a strong voice on Galway County Council. Anne Rabbitte brings her love for her community, pride of place, diverse skills in the home, in community, in business, childhood education, youth, sport and tourism. Anne spoke without notes and spoke of her passion, energy and drive to represent all sections of society from the farmer, to the mother of school going children she spoke passionately about the demise of rural Ireland and closure of the Garda stations, the treat of the 2/3 & 4 teacher schools, she spoke the lack of a proper local health centre in Portumna and primitive conditions that the local health nurse has to work in. Anne spoke of the role of voluntary groups from the tidy towns to the GAA Clubs, Rugby Clubs and Athletic clubs and the role of these volunteers in the community. Anne spoke of the hidden gem of South East Galway and that was tourism and how it needed to accessed, marketed and represented at a local, national and European level.

She pledged she would represent the views of the people of South East Galway with honesty, conviction fairness and unwavering loyalty. Anne concluded by reading her personal mission statement to the People of the Loughrea Electoral Area. She got a standing ovation, and Dara Calleary TD commented it was the best acceptance speech he had heard by far.

If ever a town or a community ever needed a local county representative Portumna and its surrounding area needs one. Many delegates on the night felt not only was she council material but T.D. material and the delegates were very excited by this new candidate Anne Rabbitte.
