Nursing Posts
Colette Cowan, is Chief Director of Nursing & Midwifery for the West /North West Hospitals Group. Colette was appointed in October 2012 and was the first appointee in the country. The West/North West Hospitals Group is one of six new hospital groups announced by the minister for Health Dr. James Reilly T.D. in May 2013, as part of the reorganization of public hospitals into more efficient and accountable hospital groups, that will deliver improved outcomes for patients.

The West/North West Hospitals have vacancies for nurses for theatre and critical care at Galway University Hospitals (GUH) and across the Hospital Group. In a recent interview on Galway Bay FM Ms Cowan stated that: employing additional nurses will allow us to work to full capacity at GUH and would allow us to open an additional four theatres. With additional theatres we can improve patients' access to surgery and reduce waiting lists. We are hoping to recruit up to 30 theatre nurses and 10 critical care nurses.

Ann Callanan was the first name drawn and the shop card was Treacy Tyres. The following were the runners-up and they received €100: Kathleen Fogarty, Lauren Smith, Sally Gibbs, Patrick Blake, Rose Darcy, Marie Earner, Mary Conwell, Joan O Flaherty and Michael Corcoran.

Christmas Day Swim
The Christmas Day swim is now an integral part of the day just as much as the Turkey is to the dinner. As usual there was a large turnout to cheer on the brave swimmers who make it look as though they are enjoying themselves in the cold water of the River Shannon. It is a wonderful place to meet up with friends and acquaintances. All monies raised through donations on the day and sponsorship cards will go to the Galway Hospice Home Care Service.

A special thank you to the local branch of the Portumna Red Cross and our Lord Mayor Mr Donie O Meara who came dressed as a Turkey. Donie comes down every year and adds a touch of magic to the proceedings.

Celebrating Ireland's National Forests
A record-breaking number of entries for the 26th Annual RDS Forest Service Irish Forestry Awards has revealed the very best woodlands and forests in Ireland for 2013.
