Redwood National School Anniversary
2014 marks the 75th anniversary of Redwood N.S. To celebrate this wonderful occasion, a special mass in Redwood Church and a re-union buffet dance will be held in the clubhouse, Lorrha on Saturday, 07th June 2014. We are currently putting together lists of past pupils. If you think that you can be of any help locating past pupils (addresses etc) or if you have any old school photos or would like to be involved , please drop into the school any evening after 3 p.m. or contact on 090 9747186 / 086 8834083.


Portumna Players Present a Night of Light Comedy
For one night only: Portumna Players Drama Group in The Derg Inn, Terryglass on Friday, 7th February 2014 at 9pm. Enjoy a night of light comedy with a performance of "Mirror, Mirror" & "Dating Hamlet". Admission just €5.


Borrisokane Athletics Club
Borrisokane Athletics Club are holding a 10k race and a 5k fun run/walk. Entry for 10k is 15 euro and 10 for the 5k. It will be held on Sunday March 16th starting at 1pm. For more information please call 0872210115.


'Beat The Cube Challenge' - Portumna Camogie Club Fundraiser
'Beat The Cube Challenge' takes place for one day only on Sunday the 16th of Feb in Portumna Town Hall. On the day a number of pre set challenges awaits young and old where skill, speed,  accuracy and a cool approach to the various challenges are the order of the day. There will be five challenges and any one who is successful enough to get to the last challenge this is against the clock. During the course of the challenges you have the option of choosing a simplifier. There is a prize fund for 1st, 2nd & 3rd.  All proceeds from the day will go towards Portumna Camogie Club. More details of the challenges in next week’s notes.


Abbey 10KM Road Race
Plans are now well advanced for the forthcoming Abbey 10KM which takes place on Sunday 16th March. The race is AAI approved and there is full public liability insurance. Entries can be made on line at wwww.runireland.com or on the day of the race. The official launch take place later this month.


Rathcabbin Players Present 'Poor Beast in the Rain'
Rathcabbin Players return to the stage this coming week-end on Thursday 30th Friday 31st. Sat. 1st Feb. Sunday 2nd Feb. in Rathcabbin Hall with their powerful production of the Billy Roche play 'Poor Beast in the Rain'. Booking is necessary to be sure of a seat on (087) 2360096 between 9 and 6pm daily.

Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
On next Thursday 6 February at 7..30 pm sharp in Portumna Retirement Village the Active Retirement Association will hold a 'musical evening' with singing and dance. Come along and join in the fun and wear your dancing shoes. This is an open night so everyone is welcome, young and old if you would like to see what genuine fun, laughter, friendship and a wide and varied variety of activities are on offer.

The A.G.M. went off successfully and the best of luck to all the incoming and outgoing officers of the committee and all the members who by their input made 2013 such an enjoyable year.

Take note, Art classes under the direction of Wolf Lorrien will be recommencing the 10th February.


Portumna Camogie Club
Portumna Camogie Intermediates take on Ballyhale Shamrocks the All-Ireland Semi-Final in Moneygall next Sunday 2nd February at 1pm. Best of luck to all concerned.

The club held a Juvenile presentation evening last Friday in the Retirement Village Social Centre. Presentations were made to the U12 Runners-Up in the County Final and also to the girls who took part in County Development. Special thanks, to Alicia & Tony Williams for providing facilities and refreshments and Brian Murray who made and sponsored lovely wooden plaques for the development girls. All had a great night.


Portumna GAA Club
There was no winner of last Sat nights lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 2 5 7 11. Three people matched three numbers. Next weeks jackpot is €17.700. Lotto can be purchased on line at locallotto.ie.

At present the Club have tickets for sale at the cost of €10 which can be purchased off any committee member or any of our senior hurlers. Croke Park is funding all the prizes and all revenue collected goes to the Club. Your support would be appreciated.

The Club's A.G.M. took place at the week-end. The chairman in his address thanked all managers’ selectors of adult and juvenile teams parents and any one who helped out the club during the year. He said the club was successful on and off the field. He congratulated the senior hurlers and management on their County final success and he wished them the best of luck in the All Ireland series. He thanked the development committee for all their ongoing work on the facilities. Damien thanked all lotto sellers and all people who raised finance for the club during the year. He thanked Al Hayes the clubs main sponsor for their continued support and to all the other people who kindly sponsored the club during the year. Damien thanked his fellow Officers for all their hard work and commitment. It was agreed at the A.G.M. to affiliate a junior c team this year. Portumna G.A.A. Club Strategic Vision and Action Plan 2013-2018 was launched by the Chairman at the meeting. A presentation was made to all the under age players who represented the club on the u14 and u16 County Academy squads.

Portumna Vintage Club
The Annual General Meeting of Portumna Vintage Club was held recently in O Mearas Portumna. The meeting was well attended by local vintage enthusiasts with a number of new members joining the club on the night. The clubs officers gave a run down on the activities for 2013. The club will be taking part in the Portumna St. Patrick’s Day parade again this year, although the date of the parade will depend on the fortunes of the Senior hurlers. There will be a number of events during the year including a vintage car and tractor run on Sunday 11th May, a vintage car run on Sunday 20th July. The Club also hopes to host a vintage show as part of the Shorelines Arts Festival at the Irish Workhouse Center Portumna on Sunday 21st September. Linda McNamara
Linda McNamara, daughter of Tony and Florence McNamara, St Brendan’s rd. Portumna, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Linda attended Portumna College from 1987 to 1992. She did her Leaving Cert in 1992.


Portumna Bingo
Bingo in the Town Hall Portumna every Saturday evening and this weeks jackpot is €5100 in 45 numbers or less. There is a raffle every night with great prizes up for grabs.


Wedding Anniversary
John and Kitty Horan celebrated their 50 Wedding Anniversary in early January. They were married in St. Annes Church, Digbeth, Birmingham on the 4 January 1964. The celebrations were held in Portumna Golf Club Restaurant, present were their six children and sixteen Grandchildren and friends.


Killimor GAA
Last weeks lotto numbers were 7, 10, 23 and 29. The jackpot was €4,300.Last weeks 5 lucky dip winners (€20) were Chris, Brian, Mark & Tracy Gohery, Eugene Duffy, M & C Gordon, Mike & Ann Reilly and Christy Gohery. Next week's jackpot is €4,400 which will be held in Nevin’s.
