Book Launch - 'Loughrea: a Parish History'
The first of a set of three volumes on the history and folklore of the parishes of Clonfert diocese is due to be launched in the Loughrea Hotel and Spa on Friday, February 28th at 8pm. Loughrea : a Parish History is the fruit of 10 years work by Declan Kelly, former archivist of the diocese and now a field archaeologist. As the author himself says: "I had gathered a huge amount of material when preparing 'Meadow of the Miracles', the official history of Clonfert diocese, for publication. Much of it came from older people I interviewed and who are now gone to their reward. Not all of this fitted easily into the text and so I have written up potted histories/folklores of the individual parishes in the hope that this material will be of use to students and researchers in years to come."

The first volume on Loughrea and the cluster of parishes near it is dedicated to Bertie Donohoe, who is no stranger to readers of the Connacht Tribune, as he wrote under the penname of JBD for many years. "Bertie was a great friend" says Declan "and is sorely missed by all who knew him. I wanted to express my thanks for his friendship through this dedication and I feel sure he would have gotten a great kick out of the project."

The book has chapters on Loughrea, Leitrim/Kilmeen, Cappatagle/Kilrickle, Mullagh/Killoran, New Inn/Bullaun, Carrabane, Kiltullagh and Killeenadeema/Aille and is jam-packed with folk tales, ghost stories and some fantastic photographs. Declan also has included many photographs from the collection of Pat Barrett, a well known historian and raconteur from Loughrea. The book, which is published by the History Press, will be on sale at the launch for €15 and after that at News N'Choose in Loughrea and Salmon's Department Store in Ballinasloe. All are welcome to attend the launch in what promises to be a good night for reminiscing and Loughrea: a Parish History promises to be a much-thumbed reference book for the district for years to come.
