Book Launch a Huge Success
The function room of the Loughrea Hotel and Spa was filled to capacity last Feb 28th for the launch of a new publication on the history and folklore of Loughrea by author Declan Kelly. Among the 300 people who attended the launch, were members of the family of the late Bertie `JBD` Donohoe, who wrote for many years for the Connacht Tribune. Such is the success of the book, that the first print run has sold out locally. Loughrea: A Parish History is the first of three volumes on the history and folklore of the 24 parishes of Clonfert diocese. In what is a neat hat-trick, author Declan Kelly will be publishing all volumes this year under the aegis of The History Press.

Speakers on the night included Dr Brian Casey and Senator Lorraine Higgins while Trudy McEntee, a daughter of Bertie`s, spoke on behalf of the family. The author, who is a former clergyman, acknowledged the presence of so many friends and former parishioners and brought the house down with an anecdote that Bertie had told him many years before.

A well respected field-archaeologist and historian, Declan received first-class honours in his Masters Degree in 2012 and was awarded the Waddell Prize for Excellence in Landscape Archaeology for his dissertation on unbaptised infants burial grounds in southeast Galway. He is considered one of the leading authorities on the subject of unconsecrated burial grounds throughout the country and is publishing his thesis next year in a form that will be accessible to the public in general. This publication is eagerly awaited as it provides a text-book approach to surveying and understanding these monuments and also a guide as to how community groups should preserve them.

While these works would be considered some achievement in themselves, he is also working on a history of St Brigid`s Hospital in Ballinasloe, a work on the archaeology of the Great Famine in southeast Galway and a memoir/history of Creagh, his native place. When asked how he finds time to produce such a prolific output, Declan replies `Our heritage is finite and so are our lives. I believe firmly in Jonathan Swift`s advice to “live all the days of your life”`.

The next publication, Ballinasloe: A Parish History, will be launched in Gullane`s Hotel, Ballinasloe at a date in June yet to be announced.
