Rugby Prodigies
Rugby, like hurling is fast becoming part of the sports culture of Portumna. At the moment Portumna has two remarkable young players who are making a name for themselves in Irish Rugby. They are Marc Kelly who lives with his parents Oliver and Celine on the outskirts of Portumna and Peter Claffey who also lives in Clonfert Avenue with his parents Pat and Johanna Claffey. They are playing rugby since they fell out of the pram. Their achievements are listed below and going on their success so far it is inevitable that they will be on the Irish International Team in a few years.

Marc Kelly won his first cap for Ireland U 19s on 22nd of April in Dublin playing France. Marc played at no 6 in a very physical and thrilling encounter, which saw France win by the very narrow margin of 12 points to 8. Marc is currently studying for his Leaving Certificate at Cistercian College Roscrea where he also captains the CCR Senior cup team. Marc has recently signed a three year contract with the Connacht Rugby academy and also plans to study International Commerce at NUIG. Marc has also played his club rugby with Ballinasloe RFC.

Peter Claffey was selected on the Ireland u18 school squad who travelled to Poland at Easter for the FIRA AER U18 European Championships 2014 where they came second beaten by England in the final. Peter started his rugby career with Ballinasloe Rugby Football Club when he was eight and played with the club at all ages. Claffey has played with Garbally College for the past 2 years. Peter will sit his Leaving Certificate in June. Over his career he has played with Connacht at u16 u17 & u18 and now u19. Peter hopes to study in NUIG and continue with his rugby career.
