Team Hope - Fundraising Table Quiz
Maria Rossiter traveled to Romania last winter as part of Team Hope. She is returning shortly and is holding a fundraiser this weekend in Killimor. She has written a short account of her time in Romania and why she is returning there.

Having seen first hand the dire poverty in Oradea, Romania, when I visited in December to distribute Christmas shoeboxes I knew I would have to return again. This time I will travel to the city of Cluj where a residential summer camp for children in real need will be provided by Team Hope from 19 July to August 1. This will be a once in a lifetime experience for them to enjoy crafts, sports, and games and have fun; something there is not much of in their lives. There will be forty children and sixteen Irish volunteers to take care of them in conjunction with a Romanian children's charity.

I am fundraising to sponsor four children to avail of this wonderful opportunity. The main event will be a table quiz in Treacy’s pub Killimor on Sat 10th May at 8pm. This promises to be a great night out. Entrance is €10 per person, teams of four people. Our compère for the evening is Michael Miley. There is a cash prize for first, second and third places. The quiz will be followed by a raffle and there are 4 hampers for prizes and music by Brian Horrigan who has kindly donated his talent and time to the cause. The draw for a mega hamper will take place on the night and there are lots of fantastic raffle prizes so please support this very worthy cause.

5K and 10K Runs in Portumna Forest Park
East Galway Hunt are organizing a 5K and 10K run in the Forest Park in Portumna on Saturday 10th May at 6pm. Children under 16 can enter for free so if a family want to participate they are more than welcome. All the tracks are gravel or road and with the ultra marathon being run in June in the Forest Park this could be an ideal way to test the route. There is €300 prize pot for the 10K and trophies for the 5K. Entries can be taken on the day in the Forest Park beside the information / picnic area or online through Run Ireland.

Lorrha National School
Green Flag: Congratulations and well done to our green school committee who have been awarded the third Green Flag for our school. All the hard work has paid off and we extend thanks to the parents who supported our work towards this achievement. We look forward to the raising of the flag before the summer break. Well done to all.

Spelling Bee: Michaela Young represented our school in the Tipperary Eason Spelling Bee Competition in Cashel at the beginning of April. The day was a wonderful success and Michaela gained a lot of experience from the competition coupled with loads of goodies from Eason’s. Well done Michaela. Now in its fourth year, over 1,000 schools nationwide entered the 2014 competition to find the nation’s top speller when the finals are held in June.

Hurling: The Lorrha / Redwood schools combination team progress in the hurling with a six point victory over Lissenhall in the second round. We play Ballinahinch in the next round soon and we wish the team the best of luck.

Thank You: Our school has been awarded €598 in free books from the recent Scholastic Book Fair which took place in the school. This could not have been achieved without the support of the students and their parents. Thank you to everyone who attended, helped and supported.

Safety Improvements at Gortanumera Cross
Galway County Council have allocated €20,000 for safety measures at Gortanumera Cross under the 2014 Safety Improvements Works. Welcoming this allocation Councillor Jimmy McClearn said that the fact that the local national school was located at this junction added to the difficulty for all road users. The Local Development Group and individuals have been campaigning to have works carried out. The Roads section of Galway County Council, will make do a design and the works will carried out later in the year. Councillor McClearn said that while these measures will go someway to resolving the problems at this junction a more long term solution regarding car parking and a turning bay are required to facilitate school generated traffic.

Acting Shakespeare
Core Theatre College presents Acting Shakespeare by Max Hafler. Every Tuesday night from 3rd June- 22nd July. Venue: Galway city

With the massive rise in Shakespeare productions in Ireland of late, Core offers this not to be missed course in Approaching and Acting Shakespeare to actors and directors. Max Hafler, a well known theatre director and international theatre coach, will work on voice, exploring imagery, character, scenes, story, working with soliloquies and the challenge of playing for real in a poetic style. There will be a heady mix of exploring the text and using the physical Chekhov technique. The course is primarily for performers but is also useful for directors and teachers. Some theatre experience is necessary. Appropriately as we are training in summer, the main play Max will work on is Midsummer Night’s Dream. This play offers you a chance to explore a very wide range of characters and styles within the same piece.

Max Hafler trained at LAMDA and worked as a professional actor for fifteen years in radio, theatre and television. He ran a highly successful small scale ensemble classical company called COMMONWEAL in London. In the last 25 years he has taught all over the world Voice, Chekhov Technique, Classical Text and Ensemble. In Ireland he teaches the Chekhov Technique at The Lir Dublin, the MA and BA drama course at NUI Galway and he is the Artistic Director of Core T. C.

Through the years Max has directed Middleton and Rowley’s The Old Law (own adaptation), Faustus, Waiting For Godot, Blood Wedding ,The Maids, The Human Voice, The Glass Menagerie, Measure for Measure, Yerma, Macbeth and Midsummer Nights Dream.
