Cinemobile Visit to Portumna
Cinemobile will be in Portumna for public screenings from Friday 4th-Sunday 6th July. We’ll be parked at the Town Square car park.

Screenings will include writer and director John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary with Brendan Gleeson and Chris O’Dowd; Maleficent with Angelina Jolie; X-Men: Days of Future Past starring Patrick Stewart and Michael Fassbender; Muppets Most Wanted, with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy; and the comedy romance The Other Woman with Cameron Diaz.

Super Summer Fair

Association of Irish Musical Societies Award
Congratulations to Portumna resident Declan Kelly who won the Odie Keogh Cup at the recent awards ceremony for the Association of Irish Musical Societies-(AIMS) in Killarney. Declan gave a hilarious interpretation of Franz Liebkind, a mad Nazi composer in Mel Brook’s ‘The Producers’ for the Patrician Musical Society in Galway. Declan was previously nominated by AIMS for his role of Fagan in ‘Oliver’ in 2008. Kelly has been involved in productions of musicals and plays spanning 30 years. This is a well-deserved award for all the years of commitment to the theatre.

N65 Upgrade
Galway County Council are to carry out repairs and resurfaceing of the N65 at Heathlawn Killimor. Local Councillor Jimmy Mc Clearn said this work which is being funded by the National Roads Authority is costing €200,000 has been approved following representations to the NRA as this section of road has subsided and is a danger to road users. Following a tender process a contractor has now been appointed. Councillor Mc Clearn said that the works are due to commence within the next ten days.


Portumna Area Tourist Office
The new Portumna Area Tourist Office will be fully operational from 4th July. Located in the Irish Workhouse Centre, the Fáilte Ireland approved visitor information point will be open year round including weekends from February to November.  Facilities for visitors include wifi, internet access and fully accessible wc facilities. The purpose of the tourist office is to provide visitors with information that will enhance their visit to the Portumna Area. As well as providing information on things to do and see in Portumna town, staff will also provide information on attractions within a 20 mile radius of the town, thus encouraging the use of Portumna as a touring base. The centre will be staffed by trained IRD personnel supported under the Community Services Programme. People with tourism related businesses are requested to leave promotional literature into the tourist office by the 4th July. For further info: tel. 090-9759200  info@irishworkhousecentre.ie


IRD Local Training Initiative
The SE Galway IRD Local Training Initiative (LTI) currently has vacancies for learners. This full-time programme prepares adult learners for entry/re-entry to the workplace and offers certification up to FETAC Level 5 Major Award in General Studies. The modules covered are: Research Study Skills; Communications; Teamworking; Personal Effectiveness; Work Experience; Work Practice; Word Processing; Spreadsheet Methods; Information and Communication Systems and the Internet. The LTI is funded by SOLAS and is based in Portumna, in the College of Further Education and Training (old Vocational School) on St Brigid’s Road. Applicants may be eligible for receipt of training/travel/childcare allowances. For further information tel: 090-9759092.


The Local Bus
The “Local Bus” weekday service Portumna to Loughrea Loughrea to Portumna will not operate from the 30th June to 31st August 2014. The service will resume on the 1st September 2014. All other services will run as normal. For further information contact South East Galway IRD at 0909741867.


Killimor GAA
Last week’s lotto numbers were 5, 23, 24 and 26. The jackpot was €6,400. Last week’s 5 lucky dip winners (€20) were Vinny Brien, Fr.  Kitching, Ava/Ally/Freya/Marion & Nigel, Aggie Callinan, Kathleen Egan/Michael Murphy. Next week's jackpot is €6,500 which will be held in Kirwan’s.


Retirement of Principal at Tiernascragh National School
There was much reminiscing and sharing of fond memories at a celebration to mark the retirement of Eamon Kelly as principal of Tiernascragh National School on Friday last (20th June) in the Community Centre in Tiernascragh. The function was organised by the Parents Association and over 200 past pupils and members of the parish gathered to celebrate his retirement with him. Tributes were paid to Eamon by local parish priest Fr Kitching, by parents and also by Aoife O’Hara who spoke on behalf of all his students of the past 32 years.
