Shragh / Woodford - Pride Of Place Competition
Shragh / Woodford is representing County Galway in the IPB All Ireland Pride of Place competition run by Co-operation Ireland in association with local authorities North and South of the border. The IPB Pride of Place Awards Initiative is a competition to recognise improvements made by local communities to create civic pride in their area. The aim of IPB Pride of Place is to encourage best practice, innovation and leadership in providing vibrant sustainable communities that improve the quality of life for all.

In April 2014, Galway County Council was invited to nominate communities in the County to represent County Galway for inclusion in the 2014 competition. Galway County Council then nominated the five communities (including Shragh/Woodford) to represent the County across a number of thematic and population categories.

Pride of Place Judges will visit each of the five communities in County Galway between Monday 21 July 2014 and Wednesday the 23 July. Each community will provide a formal presentation followed by a question and answers session and a tour of their locality to let the Judges see first-hand the achievements of the communities.

Shragh/Woodford has been selected in the 250-750 population category to represent Co. Galway and the judges are coming to visit on Tuesday 22 July. All members of the community are asked to come to the hall in Shragh for 9:40 am on the morning of the 22nd to show support for the local effort and help put our best foot forward. The overall winners will be announced at a special gala awards ceremony in November to be held in Ennis.

Shorelines Arts Festival Art Exhibition
Portumna's Shorelines Arts Festival will take place from 18 - 21 September, 2014.
Art Exhibition in The Gallery at the Workhouse. With the Shorelines Arts Festival 2014 fast approaching, we plan to keep the art exhibition open for much longer than usual. Make a note in your diaries that the exhibition will run from Sunday 7- Sunday 28 September. We are asking any artist interested in exhibiting to:
* Select one of your pieces (painting, sculpture, carving, photography etc) and bring it along to the workhouse on Monday 1 September between 6.30 and 8 pm. We regret that we cannot accept work after that time. We would ask you not to submit a piece you showed at last year’s Shorelines Festival exhibition.
* Fill in a form regarding your work and pay a fee of €5 to cover the cost of displaying materials and insurance.
* Make sure your work is ready for hanging – pictures should be framed and have a cord or wire at the back. If you do not intend to frame it yourself, please allow plenty of time for getting it framed by a professional.
* Decide on the price you want to ask. Those not wishing to sell will have Not for Sale beside their name on the catalogue. Where a work of art is sold, we take a modest 15% commission.
* After the exhibition is over, all work must be collected from the gallery on Tuesday 30th September between 6.30 and 8pm.
* We would request that work is not removed during the exhibition.
We look forward very much to seeing your work and to a very successful exhibition that will show the wealth of talent there is within the area! The website www.shorelinesartsfestival.com will be updated with the 2014 festival details in the next few weeks!
