A Taste of Lough Derg 2014 – Food Series off to a Great Start
A Taste of Lough Derg 2014 got off to a great start in Portumna last weekend with host Dermot O’Mara welcoming over 100 people to his Sunny Meadow Farm. Visitors were provided with a great selection of food from the BBQ complimented by salads and homemade dressings from the farm. Marion Roeveld from award winning Killeen Farmhouse Cheese was on hand to provide samples of cheese from her farm and families were entertained with music, face painting, treasure hunts and games. Dermot provided visitors with an interesting farm tour of his polytunnels and live produce.

A Taste of Lough Derg is a pilot food tourism initiative which involves a series of food events taking place throughout July, August and September to highlight the local produce around Lough Derg and offer visitors and locals the opportunity to attend different events over the summer months. Some events are free and there’s a nominal charge for others, therefore, people are advised to phone and book in advance. Details are available on www.facebook.com/atasteofloughderg or email Áine Mc Carthy, Tourism Marketing Coordinator for Lough Derg amccarthy@mwra.ie

The event was very well attended with almost forty vintage vehicles taking part including a 1936 Rolls Royce, a rare 1987 Citrone 2CV, and a Mercedes Unimog. The run was well supported by members of Nenagh Classic Car Club, Ballinasloe, Borrisokane and South Galway Vintage Clubs. A visit to Finnerty's Mill in Leitrim, Loughrea was the highlight of the day. This is a restored Corn Mill that has been in the same family for generations. The visitors were treated to a guided tour of the Mill which was very informative and interesting. The Club would like to thank Donie and Yvonne O Meara of O Mearas Super Valu Portumna for the use of their car park, Joe Scott who provided early morning refreshments and McCormick's Bar Curragh West for supplying the afternoon tea to very thirsty drivers.

Night at the Dogs - Fundraiser
In 2004 a young Killimor boy, Stephen Kelly, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. He underwent an intensive three and a half year course of treatment at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin. Fortunately, Stephen has made a full recovery and has just sat his Leaving Certificate examinations. He is currently a member of the Killimor Minor Hurling team. To acknowledge and support the great work of ongoing cancer research at Crumlin, Stephen’s parents, Rose and Martin Kelly, have formed a committee to organise a fundraising event. It is taking the form of a Night at the Dogs to be held at Galway Greyhound Stadium on Friday, 19th September at 7.30pm. Tickets costing €10 give access to the venue along with a race card and are available at a variety of outlets in Killimor and Portumna or from committee members: Martin Kelly 087-7575746, Rose Kelly 087-1255518, Shane McClearn 086-8562959, John Joe Conwell 087-2963803 and Teresa Walker 087-6851116.

Portumna Men’s Shed
Shoulder to shoulder, the Irish Men’s shed movement is improving the health and well being of men across Ireland. The Portumna Men’s Shed is a small group with a great punch in the local community, working with the elderly to help with gardening, painting and any small jobs they may find difficult to manage alone. They have within their group people with skills that include, carpentry, metal work and stonemasons who are putting their skills to work for the town of Portumna.

The men are hoping to get informal help in teaching and helping members in mental health issues and are also in the process of starting their very own horticulture garden giving back to the community in the best way possible in the recessionary times: fresh produce, handmade craft, entertainment, learning and friendship for all. Members of Men’s sheds can come from all walks of life - the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time.

They are hoping to expand and grow with time and to reach out as far and wide to every man in need of a little guidance or a safe place to come in times of trouble. To that end they have organized a fund raising event in the Arch Bar, Portumna on Friday 25 July, with a great Rock and Roll Bingo night. The DJ for the night is Gary Whitelaw tickets from €5.

Hayes’s Pub - 25 years Celebration
Seamus Hayes recently celebrated being in business for the past 25 years and he wishes to thank the many people through whose efforts his Silver Jubilee weekend was marvelous and memorable. Firstly the poetry group deftly hosted by Margaret Hickey with humourous offerings from Wiltrud Dull, Betty and Dick Gough from Nenagh, Mary Rourke, Eileen Smith and the inimitable Eamon Hayes. Seamus the night might be a prelude of poetic soirée in weeks to come. Silver jubilees can be variously celebrated and on the Saturday night the second day of the three day event brought a double musical delight: firstly two young talented guitarist singers Conor Robinson and Ryan Hogan and later a jaunt down memory lane with Enda Hayes on guitar and vocals with contributions from Mossie Dillane, Vincent Sellers and three times winner of the Great Outdoors Festival Best Solo female Soloist Olivia O Halloran. Monday brought this festival to a resounding and triumphant conclusion with musical masters Mark O Reilly, Jonathan Fallon and Barry Conboy. Seamus wishes to thank one and all, particularly locals and visitors without whom such events would be hollow. Roll on the next twenty-five years in Hayes’s Pub, Portumna.
