Portumna Community School - President’s Awards
The entire cohort of Transition Year students at Portumna Community School have taken on the challenge of the Gaisce Bronze award. The students will dedicate themselves over the next six months to a range of exciting activities and pursuits. The President’s Award-Gaisce is the highest award in Ireland for young adults and having President Higgins as its Patron; it is the most prestigious. In order to achieve a Bronze Award a participant must set and achieve a demanding challenge in four different areas of activity: Community Involvement, Personal Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Pursuits.

In the community section students will complete tasks as diverse as helping voluntarily on conservation projects to visiting the elderly and coaching sports to young players. Their skills section will range from traditional music and dance to sign language and computer skills. Sports range from Camogie to Karate to pony trekking. The students have already completed an adventurous trip which included a 25 kilometre hike at the Delphi Adventure Centre with their Transition Year Co-ordinator Ms. Murtagh. “Mr Coughlan the Deputy Principal stated that the students had already completed one section of the Bronze Award challenge; the skills acquired by the students as a result of their participation in the challenge will in turn enrich themselves individually but it will also provide them with the necessary skills as young adults to augment the development of community in their respective parishes wherever they decide to reside. The RSA ‘Check it Fits’ Service is coming to Portumna
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has introduced a new, free service in response to a frightening statistic that shows that as many as 3 out of 4 child car seats are incorrectly fitted which can result in serious injury or worse, a fatality in the event of a collision.

Since October 2013, the RSA’s ‘Check it Fits’ Service has checked over 4,000 child car seats and restraints in Ireland. Of these, 83% required some adjustment. Worryingly, 79% of seats required a major adjustment, of which 3% were deemed not fit for purpose and condemned, meaning they could have caused injury or even death in the event of a collision.

The ‘Check it Fits’ Service is a full-time, nationwide, free expert service which aims to put parent’s, grandparent’s and guardian’s minds at ease that their child’s car seat is safely and securely fitted in their car. The service is quick, it’s easy, it’s free and it has arrived Galway where our experts will advise on how to fix any problem, demonstrate how to fit the restraint correctly and answer any queries participants might have.

Is your child’s car seat fitted correctly? Get it checked by an expert at SuperValu, Clonfert Road, Portumna, Co. Galway on Friday 17th October 2014 from 10.00am – 5.30pm. It’s fast, it’s easy and it’s free.
