Nicola Walsh - The World Academy Choir
Best wishes to Nicola Walsh, Oldthort, Portumna, who this week as part of The World Academy Choir, University of Limerick is taking part in Flanders Festival Brussels where more than 1000 professional and non-professional singers from countries that were involved in the First World War a hundred years ago are now standing side by side to participate in a homage to peace. Seventeen Foreign and Twenty Belgian Choirs will participate in 17 joint concerts culminating in 1000 voices joining together in Koekelberg Basilica Brussels on Sunday 9th November.
Nicola has been a member of St Bridgids Church Choir Portumna for the past 10 years and is currently studying a B.A in Voice and Dance in University of Limerick.


CoderDojo
After a very successful first meeting regarding the setting up of CoderDojo in Portumna we are now inviting interested parents to attend an introduction meeting in the VEC (old vocational school) on Thursday the 6th of November at 7pm. Anyone interested in volunteering to help out is also asked to attend. We will also have registration forms on the night to register your children. We look forward to seeing you all there and please spread the word. Giving young people across the world better access to the magic behind the technology, CoderDojo is a global community of free programming clubs for young people.


Councillor Anne Rabbitte - Local Clinics
Councillor Anne Rabbitte will be starting her clinics every Monday night at 7pm in O’Meara’s, Clonfert Avenue. Friday nights she will be visiting to the outlying areas.
This Friday 7 November the clinic will be in Canning’s of Gurteeny. On alternative Friday nights she will visit Killimor and Tynagh. Follow the Connacht Tribune for details.
Cllr Rabbitte said she was elected to represent and voice people's concerns and feels these clinics will be very supportive to local communities.
Cllr Rabbitte says that as an elected local representative she will keep on top of local issues. These include such things as lead pipes carrying water in Woodford, lack of a playground in Tynagh, lighting in Kylemore and footpaths, trees and roads in Shannon Park.
Cllr Rabbitte has plans to put in a fully manned office in 2015.

The Results of the Free Sub Competition in the Portumna Contract Bridge Club, 20th October 2014 were 1st: Bernie Larkin & Cecilia Cox, 2nd: Elizabeth Ryan & Teresa Dillon, Gross: Lorna Stoddart & Bertie Hanlon, 3rd: Kaye Duddy & Patsy Hanbury, 4th: Geraldine Canning & Charlie Mullen.


Portumna GAA
The G.A.A. Club are pleased to announce that we have won the Galway Club Development Award for 2014. Our club has been complimented and congratulated for the fantastic work which has been carried out to a very high standard to provide outstanding facilities for the promotion of our games and culture within our community and County.Our application has now been forwarded to be considered for the Connacht Council Club Development Award for 2014.
There has no winner of our lotto jackpot worth €3500. The numbers drawn were 11 13 16 20. Two people matched three numbers.


An Evening of Autumnal Music, Word and Song
Join Omna Singers and Portumna Pen Pushers plus guests for Autumn Leaves an evening of autumnal music, word and song in Portumna’s Christ Church on Thursday, Nov 13th at 8pm. Admission: €8 at the door.


Writing Success for Portumna Pen Pushers
Portumna Pen Pushers meet on alternate Thursdays to share, encourage and improve their writing skills in poetry and prose.
Two of the members had success recently with their writing. Noelle Lynskey was awarded second prize in the annual Baffle Poetry Festival in Loughrea with a poem based on the theme “When the Whistle Blew”. Writer, Pat Donnellan was highly commended in the Roscommon based Siar Scéal Writing Competition, an annual competition in honour of Hannah Greally.
Members of the group are looking forward to reading at the Autimn Leaves evening in Portumna’s Church of Ireland at 8pm on November 13th.


Davitts Camogie Club
The club will hold its A.G.M tomorrow night, Friday 7th Nov at 8pm in the clubhouse Duniry. We encourage all parents and players to attend and reflect on what has been a great year for the club.
The Club will also hold its annual clothes collection on Saturday 22nd Nov. Collection points are the community centre in Ballinakill and the community hall in Tynagh between 10am-12pm. All donations will be greatly appreciated.


Gortanumera Development Association
Gortanumera Development Association will hold its A.G.M. on Thursday, 13 November at 9 p.m. in Scoil Mhuire, Gortanumera. All welcome. This is your opportunity to continue the development of Gortanumera and its environs.

Matt Fogarty - winner in the National Tree Hugging Contest
Congratulations are extended to Matt Fogarty of Fogarty Nurseries, Ballinderry, Neagh, Co. Tipperary. Matt is the National Tree Hugger of the Year 2014. Matt received an amazing 1204 votes. He had to vie with 14 other participating ‘tree huggers’ in the month-long contest which was coordinated by the development education (DE) and forest campaigning NGO (non-governmental organisation) Just Forests. A total of 3317 votes were cast during the contest which commenced on 1st October and ended on 31st October 2014.
Matt’s tree/story will now go forward as Ireland’s nomination in the European Tree of the Year 2015 Contest (ETY-2015). Voting will take place during the whole month of February 2015. Fifteen countries are expected to take part in the ETY 2015 Contest. Ireland’s entry in ETY-2013 - the ‘King Oak’ in Tullamore - came third with over 5800 votes. Unfortunately Ireland’s entry in ETY-2014 - the Giant Grey Poplar - at Birr Castle Demesne blew down during the severe storms of last February.

Just Forests founder/coordinator, Tom Roche, will present Matt with an hand-crafted Irish oak framed copy of his winning tree/story valued ay €200 on Friday 7th November 2014 in the offices of the Neagh Guardian, Nenagh.
