Fit Towns Initiative
We are writing to you to inform you of a brand new initiative recently launched by Galway Sports Partnership (GSP) to encourage communities to become more physically active. The initiative, known as Fit Towns was launched by John Tracey, CEO of the Irish Sports Council, on Monday the 6th of October 2014 in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway. Fit Towns is a competition open to groups and communities across Galway City and County, geared at identifying the fittest place in Galway, with three separate categories: Towns and urban areas with populations over 2000, Towns and villages with populations under 2000 & Offshore Islands. We are delighted to announce that Portumna will be taking part with the aim to get our community active.
We have formed a committee with the aspirations of applying for this project and to offer new activities and sports to various target groups while continuing to support and promote existing clubs and groups to get Portumna and its inhabitants out and active from 10th Jan-28th Feb 2015.
We are hoping that you and/or your club will join with us and assign a representative to work closely with our committee. We are holding an open meeting in the Social Centre in Portumna Retirement Village @ 8pm sharp on Wednesday 19th November and would hope that you can attend.
Please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee members below for further information. Yours Sincerely, Portumna FIT town Committee 2014/2015 - Chairperson: Sarah Killeen 087-2117262, Secretary: Orla Kennedy 085-1903246, PRO: Cllr Anne Rabbitte 087-2424704, Treasurer: Vincent O’Hara 087-6428055

'Mother Knows Best' by Lorrha Variety Group
Mother Knows Best will be performed by Lorrha variety group on 5th, 6th and 7th December. Directed by Phil Quigley.
While doing a painting job for the McDermotts, Nick Cassidy renews a friendship with their youngest daughter, Suzy. The two begin dating, much to the disapproval of Suzy’s mother, Tess, who is hoping to make a match for her daughter with stuffy financial consultant, Adrian Bird. Tess resolves to break up the young couple by whatever means she can. However, such is Tess’ pre-occupation with her daughter’s love-life, she fails to notice that her own husband, Harry is falling under the spell of her man-hungry golfing partner, Dulcie Cotter. Matters come to a head when Nick’s workmate, Joe Galligan breaks into McDermott’s, looking for money to pay off his gambling debts. During the theft, Tess’ plotting is exposed and Harry comes to a fateful decision.

A special thanks to neighbors, family, friends, local businesses and surrounding parishes for their generous donations towards our auction. Also, to all who offered their services and helped out on the day, baked cakes and helped with the organising in the weeks leading up to the auction. A special thank you to Donie O'Meara and Francis Larkin for their time on the day in auctioning of all the items.
The money raised will now go towards improving the facilities of the hall so that it will be available and fully equipped to host many different types of events eg. plays, social events, birthday parties, dances etc, for the community or anyone who would be interested in running an event. Thanks to all again and hope to see you all in our hall in the near future.
