On The Way to Crokers
A hearty well done to Portumna’s Reámonn MeEntee who plays hurling for Fullen Gaels, Manchester in the County of Lancashire. They are through to the All Ireland Club Junior ‘A’ final in Croke Park on Sunday 15 February. This is their second time to reach the final in two years, unfortunately losing out to Thomastown at that time, on a scoreline of 2-17 to 2-14. This year they play Bennetsbridge another Kilkenny team so hopefully they will be the victors on this occasion.
Credit is due to Stan Murray Hession and the management team on getting to the final twice in three years. We wish them well on the day and ‘keep up the spirit lads’.
Also congratulations is due to Mullagh Camogie Club on reaching the senior All Ireland club final which will be played on the first Sunday 1 March in Croke Park. Reámonn’s brother Eugene is the Mullagh Camogie team trainer. Eugene was Captain of the Portuman Senior Hurling Team when they won their first club All-Ireland title and has also played with Galway Senior Hurlers. If nothing else determination will drive Mullagh on to win the final. Eugene in his hay day was known as the “Bionoc Man’ he is lucky to be walking never mind hurling after undergoing seveal operartions on his back, his inspiration alone should encourage them to victory. All the best to the team amnager Pakie Dervan and his backroom staff. Girls, no pressure but “bring home the cup”.

Bishop visits Portumna
The Bishop of Clonfert, John Kirby visited Portumna last weekend and concelebrated mass on Saturday evening and Sunday Morning in Portumna and Gortanumera. On Sunday after 11am he blessed the newly constructed shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes. It was erected recently on the grounds of St Bridgets Church. This was made all the more poignant as February 1st is the feast day of St. Bridget, patron saint of the parish. It was also the 30th anniverasry of the passing of Fr. Pat Jannings former parish priest of Portumna.

Commissioner of Oaths
Congratulations to Gerry Fallon, P.C. Domnick Street Portumna and community activist on his recent appointment as Commissioner for Oaths by the Chief Justine Susan Denham. Gerry has spent most of his working life in Portumna. He was in the local fire brigade for many years, retiring in 2011.

An Evening of Love Songs and Sonnets
On Friday, Feb 20th at 8pm, join Portumna Arts Group for an evening of "Love Songs and Sonnets" to celebrate the love in the air that February brings. St. Patrick’s Day Events
With the onset of Spring, plans are now in place to honour the national day of celebration on March 17th. The annual parade is planned for 12.15pm on March 17th and all businesses, clubs and voluntary organisations are encouraged to get involved in the craic. With the start up of fitness groups all over the place, get a team of green together and take part- walk it, cycle it or run! Pubs and restaurants who may be planning music events are also encouraged to let us know so we can co-ordinate the activities for the day. Get in touch with Walter on 0878267054 or post to Facebook page St Patricks Day in Portumna- like and share the info and make this a parade to remember. Love Portumna and show your pride of the place on March 17th. Spread the word.

Redwood NS achieves Active Flag Status
The teachers and pupils of Redwood NS were delighted to learn that they had achieved Active Flag status early in the new year following a rigorous inspection prior to Christmas. The "Active Flag" initiative is a project by Mayo Education Centre and endorsed by the Department of Education. It promotes an active lifestyle through healthy eating and embraces being active as part of daily life.
Redwood NS have been working towards achieving this flag for over two years. The pupils have participated in a great variety of sport including gymnastics, zumba, cycling, swimming, yoga, rugby, karate, tennis, boot camp, hurling, football, athletics, soccer and basketball to mention but a few! Pupils and teachers have taken part in "Active Schools Week" and have had "active school tours" over the past two years. Pupils have also taken part in "Food Dudes", a programme that involves healthy eating and developing healthy eating habits. We would like to thank all those who helped us along the way including our parent body, The Irish Heart Foundation, The Engine Room, Portumna & Borrisokane Athletic Club. We will raise our Active Flag later in the year.
