Major Funding For Portumna Marina
Failte Ireland have allocated €420,000 for improvement works at Portumna Marina under the Lough Derg Stimulus Programme. Councillor Jimmy Mc Clearn has welcomed this allocation and said that this is the culmination of four years campaigning and is in line with the presentation that was made to personal from Portumna Chamber of Commerce and Portumna Development Company in O Mearas Lounge in 2013.
Councillor Mc Clearn said that the details of works to be undertaken will be announced very soon but this is phase 1 of a much bigger proposal and will consist of upgrading toilet and shower facilities, provision of proper Camper Van Parking Bays, public lighting and a cycle way/walkway. For many years now problems have existed at the Marina area and this development when completed will finally get this area sorted.
Continuing Councillor Mc Clearn said this is hugely important for Portumna as there has been a lack of funding for tourist projects on the Galway side of the lake but when completed will give the towns tourism a major boost and this in conjunction with the development of the Lough Derg canoe trail will bring more people and extra revenue spending to the town.
