Pemba Support Ireland (PSI)
Just before Christmas three Volunteers from Pemba Support Ireland (PSI), Sandra McGlennon from Lahinch, and Carmel and Tom McGlacken from Ballyshrule revisited Pemba Island. Pemba is a tiny island about thirty miles off the coast of Tanzania. The population of 500,000 are extremely poor and live in an area approximately one-sixth the area of County Galway.
They visited the fourteen cows, which were, in conjunction with “Bothar”, brought onto the island in 2013. These cows have produced ten calves, which will be passed on to other poor families. One cow is sufficient to sustain a family in food, school fees, medical bills, etc. PSI has also imported three thousand AI straws, which will improve the overall cattle population.
A very isolated community in Makani had begged for years for a well, but the machinery was unable to cut through the coral, so the solution was to dig it themselves, using very sharp pickaxes. Since they are very resilient people they kept at it for weeks and weeks until, having dug a hole, one metre in diameter and thirty five feet deep, they finally hit the prize of fresh sparkling water. PSI was then able to purchase the concrete liners and a hand pump. Instead of the women spending two hours each day drawing water, in a drum on their heads, they now have the luxury of water close by. Pemba Support Ireland has also funded three other wells on the island. Projects involving the production of honey and the growing of different vegetables were also visited. Since it is a tropical island these projects are possible, but the initial funding is always a problem. That is where PSI is a God Send for these people.
One of the goals of PSI, from its inception, has been the provision of education to the islanders who are so poor that many cannot afford it. The group of three visited many students who, funded by PSI, are studying at various levels from primary school to secondary school. Two students are studying to diploma in animal health, while others are up-skilling their qualifications in order to be of better support to their fellow islanders.
The population is over 99.9 % Muslim. The Volunteers stayed with the two Catholic priests who, facing very great difficulties, minister to the estimated 300 Christians on the island. They were able to supply Church supplies donated by the Apostolic Works for the Mission. The people with leprosy in Makundeni were delighted to receive hygiene packs and radios. PSI has already funded the bringing of electricity and water to the village.
There are many other contacts and projects too numerous to mention. For example, the purchase of on outboard boat engine for a remote fishing village, establishing goat and duck farms, arranging training in the growing of elephant grass for cows, funding basket making for a group of women and supplying equipment to the two very run down and primitive hospitals.
Pemba Support Ireland is a totally voluntary organisation. There are no paid officials and no administration costs. Donations go directly to some of the poorest people in the world. Sandra, Carmel, Tom and PSI would like to thank so many people whose extreme generosity enables this work to continue.
There are two fundraising events for Pemba Support Ireland coming up shortly, i.e., a beautiful walk in West Clare on Sunday 8 March and a Golf Classic in Lahinch on Saturday 6 June. If you would like to take part in either of these, please contact Carmel at 090 9741317.
