Public Meeting About the Irish language
Beidh cruinniú sa Scoil Náisiúnta i nDún an Uchta ar an Máirt, 28 Aibreán ag a 20.00 maidir leis an nGaeilge in oir-dheisceart na Gaillimhe. Cuirfear fáilte roimh chách chun an scéal a phlé agus chun moltaí a thabhairt conas ar féidir an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn in oirthear na Gaillimhe.
A public meeting will take place in the National School in Eyrecourt on Tuesday, 28 April at 20.00 to discuss the Irish language in south-east county Galway. All will be made welcome to discuss this topic and look for proposals about promoting Irish in east Galway.

Rabbitte to Run for Dail Seat
It was with high expectations that Cllr Anne Rabbitte announced at the Fianna Fail Portumna/Boula/Gortanumera Cumann AGM that she intends to let her name go forward for convention on Saturday 25 April. The Cumann welcomed the positive news and gave her their full support.


Poetry Day Ireland 2015
Plans are taking shape for Portumna’s celebration of Poetry Day Ireland on Thursday 7 May 2015. Why not join Portumna Pen Pushers and Omna singers at 8.30pm in Christ Church for a celebration of Ireland’s wondeful poetry. Admission €8.
Our mission is to celebrate poetry’s vital place in our culture by making poetry both inescapable and irresistible for a day. Watch out for poems in windows, booklets of poems in coffee shops about town and perhaps read a poem you like while having the breakfast.


Portumna Cycling Club
Portumna Cycling Club will be running cycles for beginners and members that are restarting their season every Saturday at 4pm leaving from the Library car park. These cycles will have a pace and distances to suit everyone. The usual cycles will be ran at 9am on Sunday mornings and 7pm on Wednesday evenings all leaving from the Library car park. Anyone who is interested in joining are welcome. There is safety in numbers!


Redwood National School
Congratulations to the children from 3rd to 6th class in Redwood NS who organised and ran a 'Bring n Buy' sale in the school. They raised a total of €162.22. The money is being donated to their chosen charities Trocaire and Temple Street Children's Hospital. Many thanks to all the children and parents for their support.


Western Alzheimers Tea Day
Western Alzheimers Tea Day in Portumna Social Services Day Care Centre. Castle Avenue. Friday April 24th 9:30 am to 2:30pm. Drop in for a cup of tea/coffee and a piece of cake. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Alzheimer's Facts: 47,000 people in Ireland have Alzheimers, 30,000 are female. There are 5,000 in Counties Mayo, Galway,Roscommon and per head of population counties most affected in Ireland are: Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway being the 6th per head of population. Please drop in and help us 'share the care'.

Marina and Swimming Area Toilets to Re-open
Cllr Anne Rabbitte welcomed the announcement from Galway County Council that the toilet blocks at the marina and swimming area in Portumna will be opened from the May Bank holiday weekend. Cllr Rabbitte put forward the request at last week's municipal meeting in Loughrea, stating how vital it was to the towns tourism trade that these facilities be available sooner rather than later in the season. The opening of the toilets in May means they will be open 7 weeks prior to last year.


Portumna Girls Rugby
The U15 Girls Rugby season came to a close last weekend at the Corinthians RFC tournament. Portumna Girls competed at the highest level against teams with a rich history of Rugby namely Shannon, Listowel, Abbeyfeale and Ballina. This was a very exciting couple of days of rugby which was even further enhanced when the girls met Mary Louise Reilly Irish Ladies International player and received some very sound advice from the Connacht Coach Mr.Pat Lam.
Portumna Rugby Club would like to recognise the huge success of the first season of Girls Rugby and thank the 3 people credited with making it all happen, namely Emer Power, Noeleen Fogarty and Brendan Murray.


Killimor Camogie
Killimor camogie club would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude for the huge support at their fundraising bingo.


Davitts Camogie Club
The u14 team contest the Feile B final against Athenry this weekend. The winner will go forward to represent Galway in Feile na nGael in Ulster in June. This promises to be a tight affair as only a goal separated the sides when they met in the group stages. The club wishes the best of luck to the management of Michael Blake, Tynagh, Orla Kelly, Ballinakill, Joe Farragher,Tynagh, Aine Dervan, Tynagh, Claire Mc Hugo Duniry, and especially to all the 27 girls involved in the panel.


Golfing Star
Golf may be seen as a world dominated by males, however, one of the new kids on the block at Portumna Golf Club is a twelve year old girl, Sinead Lohan. She actually lives beside the famous Portumna Golf Club. Her first experience with golf was when her dad Pauric enrolled her into the junior coaching lessons at the club that was four years ago in that short period has shown immense talent for the game. She won her first 18 hole competition two weeks and was presented with the Spring Cup with a score of 44 pts. Her team also won the 14-hole spring league and Sinead won the best overall individual score with 146 points.


Portumna Lawn Tennis Club
The club is hosting an open night for adults on Mon April 27th from 7pm-8.30pm. Coach Kieran Galvin will be on hand to introduce the basics of the game and provide tips. Rackets and balls provided, just be sure to wear runners and, best of all, there's no fee. New members welcome. Check out www.portumnatennis.com to see our membership fees.


Portumna GAA
There was no winner of last weekend's lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 2, 6, 20, 23. There was no match 3's.
The club played host to other clubs from Abbeyknockmoy, Rathoon Newcastle, Tuam and Bearna na Forbacha last Saturday for the Feile weekend. The u14 hurlers got off to a good start with a win over Bearna. Their second game resulted in a draw with Rahoon wins over Tuam and Abbeyknockmoy saw them qualify for the final, which was played in Kenny Park last Sunday. Unfortunately they went down to a very strong Annaghdown team. Well done to all involved.
The senior hurlers play Turloughmore in the first round of the championship in Loughrea on Saturday evening at 6-30pm so best of luck to all involved.


The Cantata Choir
The Fingerprint of God - a Celtic Cantata - which will be performed in the Cistercian College Chapel Roscrea on Saturday 25 April 2015 @ 7.45pm. The Cantata Choir members are from Portumna, Birr and Roscrea and Tullamore and will be joined by Sopranos Yvonne O'Toole and Breffini Fitzpatrick, Baritone Jonathan Carter and Cellist Gary Doherty. Admission €10(inc. programme).


South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society
Lecture by John Joe Conwell on 'the Bridges of Portumna' will take place on Thursday 30 April at 8:30 in the Irish Workhouse Centre. There will then be a field trip to the bridge on Saturday 9 May at 11am from the Waterways Ireland car-park, followed by soup and sandwiches at O’Mearas (€5 members, €10 non-members). All those interested are asked to be sure to book in advance via segahs1@gmail.com, by contacting us at 086 4070851, or by booking on the night of the lecture.


Killimor GAA
Last week’s lotto numbers were 9, 15, 23 and 27. The jackpot was €1,200. Last week’s 5 lucky dip winners (€20) were Bernie McGinley, Margaret Callinan Tynagh, Kieran Duggan, Tony & Irene Larkin and Celia Hobbs. Next week's jackpot is €1,300 which will be held in Nevin’s.


Portumna Country Market
The weekly Country Market which is held in the Town Hall Portumna each Friday morning are holding a Coffee/Tea morning in aid of Western Alzheimers this coming Friday 24 April from 9pm to 12pm your support would be appreciated.


Portumna and Community Town Hall
The AGM of Portumna and Community Town Hall will be held on Tuesday 12 May at 8pm. It would be very much appreciated if persons or clubs that use the hall as a facility come to the meeting. The venue for the AGM is the small hall.
The committee wishes to thank Mr Johnny Cowan a trustee and member of the committee for the past 25 years for his tireless service to the hall and its environs. Johnny retired from the committee last month. His absence will be a huge loss to the committee. We wish him and his wife Margaret all the best in the coming years.
