Eircode Community Outreach Programme
You are probably aware that Ireland is introducing postcodes in 2015. An Eircode is a smart location code for all Irish addresses. Unlike other countries, where postcodes define clusters or groups of addresses, an Eircode will identify an individual address – rural or urban – and help show exactly where it is located. This means every residential address and business will receive a unique Eircode.
There are numerous benefits of introducing Eircode. Not only will it make the delivery of services and goods to households easier, but in the case of a medical emergency, being able to accurately and quickly identify an address can save valuable minutes.
During the launch phase this summer, all residents and businesses will receive a letter notifying them of the Eircode for their address. Addresses will not be changing; an Eircode will simply be added to current addresses.
The Wheel, working closely with Irish Rural Link, are involved in a nationwide effort to reach out to people who may get left behind when Eircodes are introduced. This target group are likely to be older, have less formal education, be farmers or live in rural areas, be disadvantaged (e.g. have a disability, live alone), and have few social networks.
We work with the Association of Irish Festivals Events as ‘Outreach Champion’ for the Area of the old East Galway Constituency. We want to get as many community and voluntary organisations involved in this effort. The core approach is that the target groups are reached through people that they already know and trust and are well-placed to advise them. These people will talk to them on a one-to-one or one-to-few basis to tell them about Eircode, to answer their questions and to reassure them. This means that I need people in every local area to get involved.
I would really appreciate if your organisation would commit to taking part in this community effort. I want to get people from a range of organisations to contribute in whatever way they can, helping people in their own communities. The basic information about Eircode is quite simple and most people will not have difficulty.
Could you or your organisation help out? Do you know some people that your organisation helps or who live in your area who might need some assistance? Could you hold an event this summer to reach some of the target groups in your area? Could you get the word out through your organisation? I'd love to hear from you, let me know how I can help. I can provide leaflets, posters and other information to make it as easy as possible for you.
I’d appreciate if you could get back to me to indicate if you or your organisation are interested in helping out. Please pass on this note to anybody you think might be interested.
