The Olive Aughty Cycle
Portumna Cycling Club are running a charity cycle on Sunday 9 August, (The Olive Aughty Cycle), to raise funds for a local lady and her family. Olive (Dermody) Shaughnessy, mother of four children, was diagnosed with cancer late last year and has since undergone a tough road of treatment. Due to her illness, Olive has been unable to work and her husband Tom has given up work to help out at home.
There will be three cycles running on the day with a 100k and 50k that will take in the scenic route around the Sliabh Aughty Mountains and a 15k family fun cycle.
Additionally, the Cycling Club have acquired 4 hoppers of turf kindly donated by two local turf contractors. The club plans to have a few days out to turn, foot and deliver the turf to Olive and Tom. Assistance and sponsorship for the bog and cycling event would be greatly appreciated. For more details please contact Pearse at the Barber Shop, Portumna.

Killeen National School
Killeen N.S., Ballyshrule, Portumna celebrated its 125th anniversary on Saturday, 20th June 2015. The day began with a mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Killeen, celebrated by Bishop Kirby, Fr. Bohan, Fr Warner and Fr. O'Rourke and was followed by the unveiling of the Celebratory Wall at the school. The Celebratory Wall was erected to commemorate the 1290 pupils that have been enrolled in Killeen N.S. from 1890 to 2015. The celebrations continued in the school with displays of school memorabilia, refreshments and entertainment for the children.
The event received superb support with current and past pupils and staff, relatives, councillors, representatives from local organisations and members of the local communities all partaking in the festivities en masse. The success of the occasion was a testament to the fantastic community spirit that is at the heart of Killeen N.S.
