Launch of Bullseye Wood Children’s Burial Ground Project in Woodford
The much anticipated “Bullseye Wood Project” will be launched on Wednesday 26th August as an initiative of Galway Community Archaeology Advisory Project in partnership with Woodford Parish Development Group. The project will involve the sensitive cleaning of a small Children’s Burial Ground within woodland and recording it as a community archaeology training programme.
The site is located just outside the village of Woodford on the Loughrea Road and it is the aim of this Project to have the site included in the Heritage Council’s Adopt –a Monument Scheme. This is a new initiative that originates in Scotland, whereby the local community will be involved long term in the management and maintenance of the site. It is also planned to create a green walkway around the site as a local amenity so that the archaeology, ecology and the recreational potential of the cleared woodland can be combined and made accessible to all.
The initial call to the Council to have something done to preserve this small graveyard came from Mrs Helena O’Keeffe who had been carefully tending to the site and its little graves for years. Michael Shiel will speak on behalf of Galway Co Co, owners of the property. The project will be officially launched by Councillor Peter Roche, Cathaoirleach of Galway Co Co, and will also be attended by Dr Christy Cunniffe, Field Monument Advisor.
The launch will take place at 4pm at the site and a warm welcome is extended to the Community to support this innovative project for the area. Refreshments will follow in Woodford Heritage Centre where there will be a short presentation from Declan Kelly, M.A in Landscape Archaeology and expert on Children’s burial grounds in southeast Galway. It is anticipated that there will be a large turnout for this Heritage Week event.

Best of luck to Ronan O Meara and Johnny Kelly who are members of the U21 panel and management who take on Limerick in the All Ireland semi final in Thurles on Saturday evening.

Portumna Tennis Club
A large crowd gathered for the official turning on of the lights at Portumna Tennis Club by Chairman, Paul Royston on Sunday 9 August. The flicking of the switch was held in conjunction with the club's first ever-Mixed Team Tournament Competition, kindly sponsored by Hayes and Hayes Pharmacy.
It is a great achievement for such a young club to have two fully lit up courts, which will greatly extend the playing time for members, particularly in winter. Tokens for the new lighting system are available at Finn's Service Station, Portumna.  We thank Mark Finn for kindly offering to facilitate the sale of the tokens for the club.
The Club was delighted with the large entry to the Mixed Team Tournament Competition, which was run over four days from Thursday, 6th to Sunday 9 August. There was some great tennis played by all sections, with a very keenly contested final on Sunday night between 'Dunkellin Djokovic', comprising Valerie Cotter, Naomi Cormacan, Ann Marie McNulty and Brendan Murray who narrowly defeated 'Shanvally Sharipova', comprising Sean Kennedy (sub for Adrian Reilly), Susan Royston, Ciara Molloy and Willie Burke, to take home the Portumna Summer Cup sponsored by Hayes and Hayes Pharmacy.
The beginners section was run earlier in the week with Margaret Larkin and Collette Kennedy prevailing over Diane Reilly and Linda Carty in a very tight competition overall.
Paul Royston, Chairperson, thanked all committee members for their hard work, time and dedication in developing the club over the year. He offered special thanks to the Competition Committee, Gillian Dunne and Keith Mulhall for picking such well balanced teams and overseeing the running of the competition. He also thanked Supermac's and O'Meara's Supervalu for their generous sponsorship. The Club was very busy both on and off the court, with the sunny evenings ensuring that the spectators seats were full to capacity with fellow members lending support to the playing teams.
In such a short period of time the standard of play within the club has greatly improved and the club now have three teams competing very successfully in the Midland League Competition. Club night every Wednesday. Next competition 'Handicapped Mixed' planned for October. New members always welcome. For more information contact us at 0873906067 or follow us on Facebook.

Visual Art at Shorelines 2015
Once again, the Gallery at The Workhouse will be home to the Shorelines Art Exhibition for the month of September including the festival weekend September 17th-20th. Included in the exhibition will be the artwork from the local artists and members of Wolf Lorien’s weekly art classes in Portumna as well as guest professional artists. Guest artists for 2015 include John Brennan, Mark Granier, Aideen Monaghan, Frank O'Sullivan and Galway Print Studios.
If you are interested in exhibiting one of your works, please bring it to the Workhouse on Monday 24th August from 6-7.30 pm. Work submitted after this date may not be exhibited as space is limited. We would ask you not to submit a piece that has been previously shown in a Shorelines Festival exhibition.
The cost is €5 to help towards the cost of displaying materials and insurance. Please, please make sure your work is ready for hanging – pictures should be framed and have a cord or wire at the back! If you wish to offer your piece for sale, please also decide on the price you want to ask in advance. Where a work of art is sold, we take a modest 15% commission. Kindly build that commission into the price you place on your work.
We greatly look forward to seeing your work and to a very successful exhibition that will show the wealth of talent there is within the area!
