Water System Repairs Postponed
Cllr Rabbitte is this morning raising serious concerns regarding the announcement from Irish Water that planned repairs for the damaged inflow pipe in Portumna have been postponed for two years.
Last October, news of the much needed repairs was welcomed by the current government with Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon saying ‘it will make a huge difference to the people of Portumna.’ Irish Water stated that works should commence by early 2015 and would be completed within a few weeks- with that target being overshot by 8 months, now comes the announcement that works will be abandoned completely for the foreseeable future.
As it stands, the current outflow pipe is continually blocked up and is causing pools of stagnant water to collect around the already damaged inflow pipe. Cllr Rabbitte has said ‘The news of these delays is both unacceptable and highly alarming. Promises were made 12 months ago and have now been broken. The people of Portumna are not asking for much, just peace of mind that the pipes treating their water are safe and functioning properly. Water charges have been implemented, meters put in place and we expect and are entitled to a certain level of service.

The Gallery at The Workhouse
From Friday, Sept 4th, you are invited to visit the annual Shorelines Art Exhibition at the Gallery at the Workhouse for the month of September. With an array of art work from local artists and guest professional artists, this is a unique opportunity to take time to visit, enjoy and perhaps invest in a piece of art. Teachers and parents are encouraged to take their students along to view the inspiratonal work in this unique setting.
During the Shorelines Arts Festival, free events at the gallery include a demonstration of Bead Making by Mags Mannion on Friday, Sept 18th as part of Culture Night events. The study of body ornament allows an insight into the social and cultural structures and beliefs of society and provides a means of exploring the ways in which individuals and societies engage with each other. This practical demonstration will explore the motifs and techniques used by artisans to produce a variety of different types of beads.
Also, on Saturday, Sept 19th, guest artist Aideen Monaghan will give a demonstration on the artist and the sketchbook where pen and wash studies will be highlighted. Photographer and writer, Mark Granier, will talk about the link between his photography and poetry and members of Portumna Pen Pushers will read poems inspired by the photographs that Mark is displaying at Shorelines.

Historians, photographers, horse-dealers, farmers, townspeople, travellers all show up. Please like and share the Banagher Horse Fair page on Facebook. All welcome.

Portumna Rugby Club
Portumna Rugby Club is fielding a Women’s Rugby team for time ever this season. The initial response has been superb with great numbers turning up for training and growing with every session. The vast majority of the players have never played rugby before but they love the opportunity to learn a new sport and are whole heartedly recommending rugby to their family and friends. Portumna are always on the lookout for players and it is free to come along and try for a while and you never know, you might just love it.
This adult team is just one of the growing number of ladies only teams that Portumna are fielding this year with U12, U13 and U15 also after starting. If you would like to give rugby a try or just get some more information give Emer Power a call on 087 9515023.
