New Fishing Stands
After 12 months of hard work and cooperation Portumna Fisheries were delighted with the arrival of 19 new fishing stands. The culmination of hard graft and this year’s successful Annual Fishing Competition was the prize giving in Curley's Bar, Portumna. Visiting fishermen, who attend the competition every year were blown away by the improvements to the area. This will put Portumna well and truly back on the map, the town is fishable once again. Fishing pegs that were completely unusable before are fishable again; this has opened up the area to the pleasure angler and match angler alike. The cut of the bank has improved access and safety, making it suitable for families to enjoy also. Cllr Anne Rabbitte has said she would like to thank everybody for working together so well and working so hard to make this possible; Amanda Mooney of IFI, ESB, TUS, Portumna Chamber of Commerce, PJ Lynch & Dolores O'Shea, Portumna Shannon Clean-up Group Maureen Kenny & Mark Jerome.

Petition: Safe Crossing In Portumna
A petition has been created to raise awareness and look for support from the council to address the serious lack of safe crossing in Portumna. As it stands, there are only three tactile paving areas in the town to assist the visually impaired, disabled, elderly and indeed the townsfolk in general in crossing safely. Some of the busiest crossing areas are still extremely dangerous- namely at the Churches, the square, around the library, playground and Day Care Centre. These problem areas are located on a main road, the N65 and are therefore a matter for the NRA, not the council. This petition is to lobby the council to appeal to the NRA on behalf of the people of Portumna to ensure these vital improvements are made sooner rather than later. The petition will be available to sign in The Hub, The Library, Post Office, Day Care Centre and both Hayes' & Duddy's chemist. In addition, Cllr Rabbitte and community representative, Janet Corrington will be at the market in the square on Saturday morning at 10.30 to receive signatures.

Handbag Sale for Hospice
There will be a Handbag Sale for Galway Hospice on Friday 23 October from 8pm to 10pm in Tiernascragh Community Hall. All proceeds will go to the Hospice. This is a novel idea and should be fully supported.

The long awaited quarterfinals have arrived and what a draw - we take on Gort the County champions at the weekend we would like to wish players panel and Management best of luck.
Also best of luck to the junior A team when they play Sylane in preliminary Quarterfinal.
A big thank you to Joe Keane, Martin Dolphin & Paddy Dolphin for all the work they put in with minor panel over the year. Unfortunately it has come to an end as a much superior Killimordaly team beat them.

Lorrha & Rathcabbin Heritage Festival
As part of National Heritage Week, SCÉAL have organized a range of events for the parish. All events are free.
To kick off the weekend this Friday 28th at 9pm, Kelly’s in Rathcabbin are hosting a historic fancy dress with prizes, bar-b-q and music with DJ Ray. On Saturday night (29th) Mass is being held in Redwood Castle at 8pm, Tea and refreshments afterwards, this is a ‘bring and share’ food event, all are welcome to attend.
On Sunday 3oth in Lorrha, the day’s events start at 11am. The Local Market (taking place at Maher’s) with up to 30 stands will have something in store for everyone. Local producers have everything to satisfy the taste buds in array of artisan foods including homemade desserts, cakes, buns, pastries, honey and chutneys. Buy your own organic vegetables straight from the earth. Come have your Sunday Lunch at Maher’s and try Denis’ famous Monk’s Pie. Tea and Coffee served all day.
Local crafters have some eye catching and brilliant pieces of work and craft such as turned wood, textiles, ceramics, flowers, and wooden furniture. For the fashion conscious, we have jewelry, fascinators, crochet and knitwear designs.
On display in heritage centre will be a large volume of old photos from all corners of the parish ranging from 20 to 110 years old!, including the first combine harvester in the parish and a scarce image of the famous greyhound ‘Dutch Sandhills’ (Irish Cup Winner 1937) . A selection of old videos is being aired throughout the day including the priceless production of ‘The North Tipperary Ploughing Championship Match’ at Kileen. In this video Mick O’Meara (The Hill) interviews nearly all the crowd with his usual mixture of wit and good humor. A lot of those interviewed are no longer with us, which makes this production a real local treasure, and not to be missed.
Also being displayed is our natural heritage with references to our bogs and wildlife, with particular reference to human interactions with natural environment. Lots of information and amazing facts. Some historic artifacts will be on display also.
For the young kids at the market, there will be an interactive fun and craft table, great way for kids to spend the last day of the summer holidays. Starting at 2pm in Bouchier’s Field (beside Community Hall) is the ‘Family fun & sports day’. We are lucky to have acquired John O’Farrell and his helpers from Borrisokane to stage the Fun Day. There will be many events including sprints, turbo javelin, shot, relays and novelty events. Again this is free admission. For the adults who would like to test their strength, we have 35lb weight throw for women and 56lb for men. Also grateful to have Garrett Needham and Portumna Rugby Club organizing tag rugby for kids, a fun way to introduce kids to the sport.
Back down the village at 3pm there will be a re-enactment of O’Sullivan Beara encampment and then at 4pm, there will the old tradition of dancing at the crossroads with music and craic, so bring your dancing shoes! Music throughout the day. Promises to be a great weekend for the Parish where we all, can get together and talk, celebrate and enjoy our past, present and future, the heritage of Lorrha, Rathcabbin and Redwood.
