The Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards 2015
The winning streak continued for Fit Towns Portumna at last week’s Cathaoirleach Community Awards in The Claregalway Hotel, where they were presented with the Sports Award; a category that acknowledges groups who focus on increasing the number of people participating in sport.
'The Cathaoirleach Awards are a special night to acknowledge and celebrate the great work that people and communities are involved with around the County. They represent the broad range of community and voluntary activities that cannot be measured but can be rewarded'.
Fit Towns Portumna were represented on the night by committee members Orla Kennedy, Sarah Killeen and Cllr Anne Rabbitte. (Committee member Vincent O’Hara was unable to attend). This is a huge achievement for Portumna and highlights what can be achieved when a community pulls together to effect a positive change.
Cllr Rabbitte said ‘This award is for all the clubs, participants and volunteers that made Fit Towns such a success last year; hopefully they will continue their support insuring the initiative grows and thrives in the years to come’.
Other local groups/clubs that were shortlisted from the 90 nominations are: ‘Killimor Recreation & Fitness Project’- Shortlisted for Sports Award & Social Inclusion Award; ‘Abbey Heritage Group’- Shortlisted for Best Contribution to Heritage Award.

St. Ruadhan’s Active Retirement Association
St. Ruadhan’s Active Retirement Association, Lorrha, recently celebrated their 10th Anniversary and held a function in Coolbawn Quay with music provided by Pat & Richie. Over the 10 years, 31 of their members passed away, RIP. All the deceased members were remembered at the short Thanksgiving Service which was held after the meal. During the service each deceased member’s name was read out and a rose with their name on was brought up to a table. Once the service was over the roses were taken by the members to the quayside and placed in the water to float out into Lough Derg. Some very touching words were said at the quayside to remember them.
On the same day, Nancy White on behalf of St. Ruadhan’s Active Retirement Association and Kevin Barry who represented the Lorrha National School Past Pupils Reunion Committee presented Councillor Michael O’Meara with a defibrillator for the village of Lorrha.
All the members would like to say a very big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who supported and encouraged them over the past 10 years and look forward to even better years ahead.
