During the past year, we have supported thousands of local individuals and families impacted by cardiovascular disease. We provide them with early access to diagnosis, preventing avoidable death and disability and teach lifesaving and resuscitation skills. We have also provided accommodation and support to hundreds of families who needed to be close to their loved ones while they were in hospital for stroke or heart care. We do all this with the funds we receive through community support such as this Christmas Day Swim. Thank you for helping to save lives!

Benemerenti Medal
Congratulations to our sacristan, John Duggan, who has been awarded a Benemerenti Medal by Pope Francis for his outstanding service to the Church in Portumna. The Holy See bestows Benemerenti Medals to individuals who have merited special recognition. The Medals are Pontifical decorations instituted by Gregory XVI in 1832, and are conferred to people for distinguished service to Catholic principles, the Church and society – to those who have shown an active fidelity to and love for the Church.
John Duggan was born in Claregalway in 1931; there were seven children in his family but sadly their mother died when the children were young. John started his working life in construction in and around Galway and he also did a stint in England as many young men did at that time. In the late fifties an opportunity arose to move to Kildare, so himself and his father moved to Ballyfair near the Curragh in County Kildare, John managed a very busy petrol station in the centre of Kildare town for a number of years. In 1961 John married Nora Walsh from Roscahill County Galway and together they had six children, in the early seventies they moved to Portumna where they ran a public house for nearly twenty years.
In the mid nineties when John was very active in the local church he set up a branch of the Legion Of Mary, this group is still running today and meets every Monday night. The local church has been a major part of John’s life since he retired, there is hardly a day in the year that he not in attendance at Portumna Catholic Church, he has helped the priests of the parish through out the years and they have also been very helpful to him up to and including Fr. Lawless the current parish priest.

Woodford Vintage Run
The organizing Committee (Anthony Hooban, Gerard Lyons RIP and Paul Tuohy) represented by Anthony Hooban recently presented a cheque for €6,381.85 to Louise Conneally in aid of ‘DeafHear’ Galway. Louise Conneally on behalf of DeafHear team would like to give her heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved and took part in the vintage drive. She truly appreciates the generosity of the Woodford/Looscaun and wider community. The funds raised will enhance the services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adults in the Galway area. On behalf of all who took part we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Lyons family on the loss of Gerard who was a founder member of the vintage run. Numerous charities have benefited from this Vintage Run in the last few years thanks to everyone's support, hopefully this will continue into the future.
