Michaél Martin visits Portumna
Michael Martin Fianna Fail Leader visited the N65 Portumna Bridge Road to meet and to thank the Portumna County Council roads section for their personal commitment and hard work since storm desmond in keeping the road open and managing a very difficult situation very successfully.
Cllr Anne Rabbitte was the first to acknowledge the sterling work that the council staff had put in but supported them in their lengthy discussion that there is not enough outdoor staff working in Galway Co. Co.. One staff member stated that 10 years ago there was 23 staff and now there is only 7 and it’s a challenge on a good day to get the work done but when faced with the last 5 weeks round the clocks manning pumps, filling sand banks and monitoring water levels staff are really stretched and the daily maintance of road and gullies is very hard to get too.
Cllr Rabbitte explained to Michael Martin that this was not just an issue in Portumna but it was very apparent in the Gort area also that the council outdoor staff were stretched to vey limit and it is clearly evident that there’s a “shortage of boots on the ground“. She went on to say that the Local Authority need to urgently recruit in to the roads and maintance section and invest in equipment i.e. some of the jeeps in Gort had well and truly seen their sell by date.
Cllr Rabbitte also introduced Michael Martin to a local business man in Portumna who has been flooded since early December and he first hand seen the damage and destruction the flood damage had done. Lessons weren’t learnt from the 2009 flood because OPW or ESB still have not given the green light of approval towards installing the barrier and she requested that her party support her on this request and put pressure on Minister Simon Harris with responsibilities for the OPW to urgently look at the Portumna Proposal.

Grease is the Word
Portumna Community School students will stage their annual school musical on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 January. This year’s offering, Grease, is perhaps one of the best known stage shows of all time and is much loved because of its upbeat story line and numerous memorable songs. Audiences will no doubt enjoy singing along to favourites such as “Summer Nights”, “You’re the One that I Want”, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Greased Lightnin”.
This year’s cast will make history being the largest ever to take the stage in the long line of Portumna productions, featuring over 60 students. As with all productions from the school this will be a full scale show featuring a live orchestra, professional lighting and sound and a beautiful set worked on diligently by the students over the last few months. A feature of this year’s set will be an actual car, forming the central part of the “Greased Lightnin” scene.
