Café Connect
In an exciting initiative a group of four Transition Year students from Portumna Community School have taken on an innovative project to help people who feel they have been left behind by technology.
As part of a Dept. of Communications led pilot project schools in eight counties across the country have been invited to take on the challenge of improving their community through the use of technology. After much discussion and research students in Portumna Community School decided to address the issue of the gap between those with IT skills and those who have yet to embrace the use of the Internet. Their project involves linking up with a local café and over four Monday nights commencing Feb 22nd they will operate a drop in centre for anyone wishing to learn new skills. The drop-in sessions will run over four Monday evenings from 7pm to 8pm, commencing on Feb. 22nd.
While the sessions are free of charge attendees could of course buy a hot chocolate for their teacher! Assistance will be given in a range of activities; from the use of email and Skype to performing common tasks such as booking a flight, and renewing car tax. While you are invited to drop in for even just a few minutes, pre-booking would be preferable. Please contact Majella at Blas Café, Portumna on 0877079658 to reserve your place. The sessions are intended for those with little or no experience so no need to feel intimidated!

The River Shannon Protection Alliance
Plans to divert water from the River Shannon to Dublin City and Eastern Region: The River Shannon Protection Alliance (R.S.P.A.) Lough Derg Branch will address this issue at a meeting in O'Meara's Restaurant Portumna on Thursday 25th February 2016 at 8pm. Information will be given on the proposals for abstraction of water from the River Shannon. The R.S.P.A. will highlight their concerns on the impact on the Shannon Region – ecologically, economically, socially, on farming, tourism, water sports, fishing and business.
The R.S.P.A. was established in 2007. In April 2015 they made a formal submission to Irish Water expressing their objections. Port Omna Beo Nature & Wildlife Group are organising this meeting to inform people locally about these proposals. All are welcome to attend.
