River Shannon Protection Alliance
Proposed Plans to Divert Water from the River Shannon to Dublin City and the Eastern Region.
The River Shannon Protection Alliance Lough Derg Branch recently addressed this issue at a public meeting in Portumna. The meeting was organised by Port Omna Beo Nature and Wildlife Group. They informed those present on the proposals to abstract 330 million liters per day by a 165 kilometer pipeline from the Lower Shannon Region. The current plans are focused on Parteen Basin. This is the third proposal, the first focused on Lough Rea, the second on Upper Lough Derg. By May 2016 the next phase in the decision-making process is expected to be complete.
The RSPA highlighted some of their many concerns, which will impact on the tourist, and economic life of the Shannon Region. The adverse effects on boating, fishing and ecology would be acute during summer/dry spells when water availability is lowest and demand is highest. Also reduction in the water levels increases the risk of Algae Bloom. The eco system of the Shannon and its hinterland is a fragile one. It has a number of important N.H.A’s, S.A.C.’s and S.P.A’s for wildlife. These areas are extremely sensitive to fluctuations in water levels and rates of flow.
In the Shannon Estuary, the Harbour Master has expressed serious concerns that large-scale navigation would be compromised. The scheme would contribute to further regional imbalance, leading to further concentration of industry in the greater Dublin region, rather than the greater regional balance that this country needs. It is a very costly scheme and not a good use of tax-payers money as it is estimated that 30-40% of Dublin’s water supply is currently lost due to leakage and there is no serious commitment to repair the system. Limerick City Council and Clare Co.Co. have passed formal resolutions of objection to the Shannon water abstraction scheme and the R.S. P.A are hoping that other Co. Councils will follow their action. The plans are contrary to the principles of the Water Framework Directive. For further information visit www.Shannonprotectionalliance.ie.
