Galway Students Excel in Awareness Competition
A group of Galway transition and 5th year students have earned prizes for raising awareness of the work and mission of a key Regional Assembly.
The Northern and Western Regional Assembly invited students to participate in a competition to raise awareness and understanding of the role and function of the Assembly. The NWRA is responsible for the management of European Union Regional Development funds in the Border, Midlands and Western region, which includes Co Galway and Regional Economic and Spatial Planning (RESP).
Councillor Jimmy Mc Clearn, Cathaoirleach of the NWRA, presented students of Portumna Community School, Co Galway, with their certificates and prizes. The "Raising awareness of the Northern & Western Regional Assembly "encouraged Transition Year and 5th year Students in the school to design a communication and publicity campaign.
Cllr Mc Clearn paid tribute to the Galway students and the Portumna Community School Principal, Mr. Derry Long, for the manner in which he encouraged the students to participate in the competition. Councillor Mc Clearn said that over the past number of years, the Regional Assembly had actively promoted awareness of regional issues. As Cathaoirleach he was delighted to have nominated Portumna Community School as the pilot project for this year’s competition. He was encouraged by the number of young people participating and said it was a novel way to encourage students to learn about the workings of the Assembly.
Mr Long praised the students that took part and said that in future years their participation in this project would serve them well in their careers. It was an achievement that could be justifiably recorded on their CVs.

Share a Dream Cheque Presentation
Unplugged for Share a Dream is a charity EP created by Martha Tuohy (15) and Eric Flaherty (17) two second-level students from Portumna, County Galway.
Share a Dream is a charity close to Martha and Eric hearts. Eric’s little sister Davina, diagnosed with a brain tumor and Hydrocephalus in 2013, was lucky enough to be in receipt of a Dream (and a Child of Courage Award) in 2014. After seeing how much Share a Dream did to make one little girl smile during a very difficult time in her life, Eric and Martha wanted to do something to help raise funds for other ill children who deserve to have their dreams come true.
