Nika’s Story:

Nika is six years old and lives with his family in a typical local house or enkaji. These houses built by women are made from sticks, mud and leaves with a grass roof. Nika is caught in an educational trap. Nika does not go to primary school which is free because he has not been to nursery school, which costs 300 schillings a month. During the day Nika helps to collect sand which is then sold. He also digs out dead roots for firewood because it is illegal to cut down trees. He likes to play with a football which is made out of paper and stockings.

Lord, I have so much in material terms and yet I am never completely content. I do not appreciate how fortunate life has been for me. In the face of Nika, I see your challenge to take my head out of the clouds and face the reality of my extravagance and wastefulness. As I listen to the story of Nika and his family I hear you asking me to leave what is comfortable and familiar. You invite me, like Abraham, to trust in your providence and care.
