Dear Parishioners.
Our schools are back in action again and the young people return to the books. There are approximately 720 pupils attending schools in this parish. 227 in St. Brendan’s national school, 40 in Gortanumera school and 447 approx in Secondary school. That is an awful lot of energy, hopes and brains. For all there are new classes, new friends and new challenges.
Some principals have held their “Staff meetings” and have sorted out “Who does what” and the teachers have given their annual “ If  you behave and nice to me, I will be nice to you” speech. For some the word
“Exam year” is being embossed on their foreheads like “Raddle on sheep”. New regimes are being introduced in homes to accommodate new promises of study, plans are made and bribes offered and so on.
While our local schools are in good condition. Resources are not always adequate. We need extra class rooms and other facilities. We think also of children of other lands particularly in the third world and in areas of war and turmoil in their quest for education and knowledge. It is not so long ago that our country relied on “Hedge Schools” to train the young and we are conscious of those who have only dilapidated sheds and shady trees as classrooms.
We are investing in the future of the individual of our families and of the nation. All involved, pupils, parents, teachers and priests need to be supported and given reassurance after all. “ A mind is a terrible thing to waste” we pray for a fruitful and successful year.
