The year for Priests - 19th June 2009 to 19th June 2010
The year should provide a welcome opportunity for the entire church, priests and people to reflect on the role of priesthood and responsibility we all share for promoting and fostering the unique vocation of the priest.
Why Volunteer?
Think of what life would be like if volunteers suddenly disappeared. Who would deliver meals on wheels and visit families to offer care and comfort. Mind children to let you do the shopping. Give their energy and time to train teams. Help young children use their talents in music, song drama. Support people in grief. Welcome children into our community.Visit people in hospital and nursing homes. Help people in distress by listening on a phone line. Raise money for research to conquer disease.There are so many reasons. Volunteering……
- Lets share your knowledge and talents.
- Provides opportunities for making many new friends. Some volunteers have even met a spouse.
- Brings the special fulfillment that comes only from helping others.
- Helps you “get outside” yourself and put your own problems…even grief…in perspective.
- Allows you to polish old skills and learn new ones.
- Lets you repay an organization that has helped you or someone you love.
- Sometimes leads to a paid job or new career.
While the desire to help others is important, it isn’t the only good motive for volunteering. If you’re feeling lonely or depressed, if you need to feel needed-Volunteer! It is almost impossible to be a volunteer without helping yourself as well. Portumna Parish would welcome you as a volunteer-one/two hours a week or whatever you wish to offer.
