Portumna Red Cross
Irish Red Cross Youth Service Awards were held last week in Ballinasloe in Haydens Hotel. The Portumna Red Cross Branch had a number of youth members who were eligible for 3 year and 5 year awards. Portumna had the largest group participating for these awards.

The Adult members of the RCB wish to congratulate and thank all the Cadets and Novices for their commitment to community events and regular Monday night meetings. They have a number of members who have trained to the level of Emergency Medical Technican over the last few years. The branch have a group of 50 people who meet on a regular basis.

Portumna Community School
Portumna Red Cross recently attended at Portumna Community School to give a Basic First Aid course to the Leaving Certificate Applied Students. The students were very enthuaistic and participated very well with our Instructors. Red Cross Certificates were presented to Eamon Burns, Filip Janiszewski, Ciaran Milne, Niall Royston, Rose Sweeney, Kevin Corcoran, Keanu Donlon, James Lyons, Larry Sweeney, Conor Lyons, Adrian Casprzak.

It is our great pleasure to assist the Community School with these Courses and to issue Certificates to the participants.

Red Cross Update
The Portumna Red Cross last week hosted a visit from the Area Director of Units Marie Geary, who was accompanied by the Deputy Officer Mossie O Sullivan, Marie appointed Killian O Loughlin and Ian Murphy as Assistant Area Directors. These new appointments will help us to have a more amalgamated union with our Area Office in Galway. Ray Murphy and Maura Gorman are the Portumna Unit Officers, and Anna Moran got promoted to Sub Unit Officer on the night. We have 96 people as part of our unit and we are delighted to give everyone the opportunity to go on duties and gain first hand experience of first aid. We cover hunt events, triathlons, Karting, motor-sport, forest walks, show jumping and much more. We greatly appreciate all the local support that our community give us throughout the year. Our Chairman Sean Murphy is our local ambassador and is a well known figure around the town willing to help with all community efforts.

Portumna Irish Red Cross Ambulance Our Branch provides training in the following areas:
  • Practical first / basic first aid
  • Intermediate first aid
  • (E.M.F.R.) Emergency Medical First Responder
  • (E.F.R.) Emergency First Responder

By joining our branch you can avail of life saving training and the cost of membership is only €10 per year. All training, equipment, and certification is supplied by the Branch throughout the various stages of training upon successful completion and certification at each level.

We are also in need of a number of drivers to drive our Ambulance. All drivers must satisfy the requirement of the Irish Red Cross for ambulance drivers.

By joining our branch you will have the opportunity to serve on various ambulance duties such as sporting and community events in addition to aquiring vital liefsaving skills that may be useful in everyday life. The Red Cross internationally is the largest Humanitarian Organisation in the world with over 2 million member's world wide. These members are engaged in assisting in the most devasted areas of disaster in addition to providing on going community assistance in their own areas.

We meet every Monday night in Na Calai, Abbey Street, Portumna (in the upstairs of the building) @ 8pm.
