Boys and Girls Rugby
Let your child try rugby for free with Portumna RFC. Any child born 2002 to 2007 inclusive is welcome to try rugby for free until the end of September. Boys and girls train and play together starting on Sunday 15th September at 10.30am at the rugby pitch beside the Library. They'll even get a free gum shield to get them started.

At all ages grade up to under 13, rugby is played in a non competitive environment, which means that every child that turns up to rugby training is played in every game. There is no pressure on coaches or players to win matches, the overriding emphasis is on having fun while learning new skills along the way.

So why not bring your child down, you never know they might just love it and you have nothing to lose except a Sunday morning or two. More information from Mark Scannell on 087 6434230.

Portumna Rugby AGM
Portumna Rugby Club recently held their AGM, it was well attended, interesting and at times very entertaining. There was an overall optimistic feeling in the room and a promise to work harder and smarter to try and drive the club on even further in the coming seasons. When it came to the election of officers, the top table remained fairly static, but a number of new committee members have come on board and they are being groomed for greatness, even if they don't realise this themselves.

The new committee is; Mark Scannell (President), Michael Goode (Secretary), Iain Foulger (Treasurer), Michael Brady (PRO), Francis O'Halloran, Dermot Moore, Gareth Needham, Noeleen Fogarty, Emer Power, Francis Larkin, Ian Bloomer with others to be approached also. Some well deserved and hard earned player awards were also given out on the night, with Niall Quinn getting the Player of the Year and Mark Hoary receiving the Most Improved player of the Year.

Portumna Mini Rugby
Portumna Mini Rugby (under 8's-Under 12's) ended their season recently with two fantastic occasions. Their final home blitz of the year saw teams from Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Birr, Nenagh and of course Portumna play each other at all age levels with over 250 children enjoying the fun atmosphere and welcome that Portumna Rugby Club created for them. These are non-competitive occasions with the over-riding emphasis on fun and enjoyment and isn't that what children playing should be all about. Everyone was fed and watered too, thanks to generosity of Horan's Londis.

Their season finale as always is their Funday and medal presentation at the pitch. This is a day when rugby is of only minor importance and the children get to cut loose a little bit on obstacle courses, bouncy castles, mud slides and other serious fun events that are laid on for them by their enthusiastic coaches. The day seems heavily based on getting the kids and coaches as wet and muddy as is possible and to this end the day was a great success. Thanks to all their sponsors, coaches and parents for making it another successful and fun season, no doubt they'll all be back again in September.

New First Team Coach & Pre-Season Training
Portumna Rugby Club are delighted to announce, Ian Bloomer as their new first team coach for the upcoming season. Ian brings with him a huge wealth of playing experience having played over 100 All Ireland League games, winning divisions 3 and 4 while with Monkstown RFC and starring alongside numerous Irish internationals with the great all conquering St. Mary's team of 2000 who lifted the AIL Division 1 trophy under the guidance of Brent Pope. Ian has also played at a very high level in New Zealand with the Taranaki province, making him one of only a handful of Irish Men to ever make a New Zealand provincial side.

This is Ian's first time as a head coach and he is very keen to pass on his vast knowledge, experience and of course the training techniques that he has learned from working under some top coaches. He will expect much from his players, but they will get plenty back in return. Pre-season starts at 7pm on Friday 3rd August and Portumna RFC are hoping that new players will be enticed into the club to work under their new coach. For more information contact Michael Brady on 087 2936054.

A Very Brief History (may not be 100% accurate, but you’ll get the idea)

Portumna Rugby Club was only reformed in 2002, a massive 40 years since their last game. The decision was initially conceived late one night when a number of ex-rugby players got talking about the "good old times" in one of the local "watering holes". What seemed like a good idea then, still seemed like a good idea the next morning and so the process was put in place. While the "alacadoos" and "Blazers" who re-started this great plan had obviously hung up their boots a long time, they still had the considerable energy to kick start the process and breath some life in the seemingly dead club. Initially they used the facilities in the local school, but now they have graduated to their own pitch under the shadows of Portumna Castle, while they use the Shannon Oaks Hotel & Country Club as their changing area and unofficial clubhouse. At present there are gentle rumblings within the club to try and get their own facilities and clubhouse.

Portumna entered the Connaught Junior League and in their first year agonisingly lost the "Ard na Cregg" Cup Final (The main competition they could enter). Every year seems to be an eventful year for the club, who seem to have been promoted or relegated every year since. This year is no different with the club in the middle of a strong push for promotion and are fancied by many to do well in the cup competitions as well.

At present Portumna field one adult team, which competes in the Connacht Junior League. They are also hoping to field an Under 18 team for the first time this season. While the club are determined to develop an underage structure, they are mindful of improving their facilities to cater for any increase in teams and securing the long term future of the club.

Portumna is widely regarded as a friendly and social club (although friendship is temporarily put on hold when the players cross the white line on match day), new members are greeted with open arms and their games are noted for the number of families who attend and the friendship that is generated between the members, players and supporters. The club responds to this by trying to provide some small refreshment for any children that are present.
